Not just a place for worship, the Chiesa di San Zaccaria, completed in 1504 is a church with an ivory white façade infused with Gothic and Renaissance elements, but it is the interior which will take your breath away for it houses exceptional artworks.


Art lovers will be lured by famous names such as Tintoretto, Vecchio, and Van Dyck. Revel in the golden glow of Giovanni Bellini’s Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints (1505), which graces an altar when sunlight illuminates the painting. Marvel at the magnificent Holy Family fleeing to Egypt in a Venetian boat by Tiepolo and a section of the original 9th-century mosaic floor preserved under glass. Do not leave this church without a visit to the eerie flooded crypt, which houses the bodies of the eight doges.
