Augusta Raurica

There’s a reason why Rome was the chosen city for the well-known quote “Rome was not built in a day” – it’s simply impossible to imagine the glory of this Roman relic could be accomplished so quickly.

The Augusta Raurica is a treasure trove filled with valuable history. If being the largest archaeological park in the whole of Switzerland isn’t enough to entice you, the park also offers the chance to whizz back in time and spend a day experiencing the true ancient Roman lifestyle. Bake fresh loaves of bread in a wood-fire oven, learn how to make Roman pottery, or simply gather with friends and family in the awe-inspiring amphitheatre exactly where the people of the past came together all those centuries ago. The concept of time loses its meaning when the past can be so authentically brought back to life through the well-preserved artifacts at the site. The park offers one of a kind insight into the lives of this pioneer civilization. Get to know them a little better, and they will prove unexpectedly similar to ourselves, complete with a distinct taste for the practical and a remarkable sense of humour.

The final touch that makes this park a true testament to the past is the miniature zoo that houses animals that were domesticated during Roman times. Give your children the chance to experience history way beyond the confines of the classroom walls, and they will without a doubt return home singing the praises of this exciting world of adventure.

Tips Before You Go
The park is sprawled across a significant land area, so you might want to rent a bike from the museum or get around in your own care, for which there is plenty of parking available. During the last weekend of August every year, the largest Roman festival in Switzerland takes place here, and the wildly popular event is not one you will want to miss out on.
