Red Sea Governorate, Egypt
Daedalus Reef

A diver’s paradise for pelagic fish such as hammerhead sharks.

The Daedalus Reef, otherwise known as Abu Kizan, is a 400m long and 100m wide standalone reef situated in the Red Sea, just 90km off the coast of Marsa Alam. A small artificial island sits in the centre of the reef, a small piece of land surrounded by deep shades of blue. While the island has nothing much to explore, it does house a lighthouse that was built in 1863, known as the Daedalus Reef Lighthouse. Standing at 30 metres tall, it is still active and is manned by the Egyptian coast guard and navy personnel. But the main attraction here would have to be the reef itself. Most people come here to dive inside the inviting waters and swim with all kinds of fish, including hammerhead sharks! Try your best to swim as gracefully as the fish here as you traverse through the vivid colours of coral here. In the peak season, you can actually hop on a safari boat, which will bring you out to the best diving spots and let you stay out overnight to experience the sea in various conditions.

Tips Before You Go
The best way to enjoy this dive site is definitely by embarking on a safari boat, which will take you to the various hotspots in the sea so that you’ll be able to catch glimpses of rare fish and actually get up close to them. Just don’t forget to bring along some motion sickness medicine in case you’re planning to stay on the boat overnight. It could be a bumpy ride at times.
