Byōdō-in Temple (平等院)

A beautiful, sacred temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the last remaining temples of the Heian period, the Byōdō-in Temple in Kyoto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that should not be missed. With a rich history dating back centuries, the renowned Phoenix Hall built in 1053 is the last surviving age-old structure - a stunning piece of Japanese past that has been so carefully preserved. Within the temple, you will see the incredible statue of Amida, paintings depicting religious stories and Kyoto’s scenery, and houses national treasures such as the wooden Bodhisattva.
