Aragonese Castle

A magnificent citadel with a complicated and intriguing history.

Ischia’s iconic attraction is the majestic medieval castle perched on the island of Mount Epomeo and looming commandingly over the sea. The 2,500-year-old Aragonese Castle, also known as the Castella Aragonese, is an awe-inspiring citadel featuring a complex web of countless defensive towers, elegant turrets and stately churches. Originally built by a Sicilian tyrant, the castle has served many purposes throughout its long history – it was used as a prison in periods of turmoil, and once housed 2,000 people in the 1700s.

The castle today provides a fascinating glimpse into history. While you’re there, make sure to see its sublime Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, which features beautiful frescoes on the walls of the Crypt of Nobles. You can also find a bit of peace and quiet at the Terrace of Olive Trees, where you can see for miles around to the Lattary Mountains, the Gulf of Gaeta, and out to the sparkling sea.
