Ameyoko (アメ横)

A shopping market with a backstory.

For an experience that marries culture and shopping masterfully, head to Ameyoko in Tokyo. This open-air market shows you the bustling city life of Tokyo, and has a plethora of items on sale from clothes to seafood. The full form of the street is actually Ameya Yokocho, which translates to candy store alley. This is because, in the past, it was something of a sweet street, specializing in selling candies. This street was also known for being a black market post World War II, selling American goods. Today, you can shop till you drop, and bring back souvenirs. Try to avoid Wednesdays as many of the shops in the area tend to be closed.
