Acuario de Sevilla

Bringing you around the world full circle to be amazed by the myriad creatures that call the ocean their home.

In the 1500s, Ferdinand Magellan set off the Andalusian Coast with a fleet of 5 ships under his command. He had only one goal: to find a western route over sea to the Spice Islands. He travelled through the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, past the migratory route of whales in the Pacific. He came across tropical reefs dense with aquatic wildlife and queer river species within the Amazon. His voyage took him across the entire circumference of the globe, making him the first to make a circumnavigation of Earth.

The Acuario de Sevilla is the latest aquarium to be added in the country and gives visitors the chance to follow in the footsteps of Ferdinand as they discover fishes, reptiles and mammals at sea as he did. Within 35 tanks and several thousand cubic meters of water, the Acuario protects 400 animal species numbering 7000 specimens in total. From ferocious sand tiger sharks to the curiously crested atamata turtle, the Acuario celebrates ocean life both close to the shores of Spain and beyond. Without a doubt though the star of the show is the 9-meter deep tank that holds two deeply adored bull sharks along with other fish species. So used to the limelight are they that they would pose for you as you peer in from windows set at different depths along the tank wall. You see, one trip around the Acuario de Sevilla can bring you on a tour around the oceans of the world all at once.

Tips Before You Go
Ever wondered what it was like to view sharks after dark when all the lights have gone out and the whole world has gone quiet? Sleeping with Sharks is your chance for a night at the aquarium. This program run by the Acuario de Seville allows participants to spend the night learning about the sharks of the aquarium, the threats facing them and most intriguingly sleep right beside the sharks’ tank. A wall of glass would literally be the only separation between you and these giant beasts through the night. The only restriction is that you require a group of minimally 20 in order for the program to run.
